Variable is a thesis project that uses variable type patterns to create motion-driven visual systems inspired by the energy of global football culture. Through animated and evolving typographic forms, the project mobilizes patterns generated by variable fonts to express rhythm, tension, movement, and identity.
A central component of the project is the Variable Jersey. The patterns on the jerseys were created using variable fonts, transforming typography into dynamic surfaces that feel alive with motion. The concept for these patterns emerged from observing the Mexican wave at a local match. In that moment, the fan becomes part of the spectacle itself—one eye fixed on the match, the other anticipating the exact second it is their turn to rise and continue the wave.
That shared choreography of movement, tension, and release became the conceptual foundation for the jersey designs. As variable fonts expand, contract, thicken, and shift, they mirror the collective rhythm of a stadium crowd: thousands of individual actions merging into one synchronized visual force.
The project seeks to trigger and convey the frenetic intensity produced by global footbal competition—the chants, crowd surges, emotional volatility, and visual noise that define the sport’s atmosphere. By transforming typography into living patterns, BRONCA reflects both the celebration and chaos of international football, capturing the pulse of stadium culture and the collective emotion surrounding the world’s game.
At its core, the project explores how design can translate the spectacle of football into immersive visual language.
