Commercial Article is the Journal of Indiana’s (little-known) Design History. The 17th edition looks at the topic of “senior cords” — an Indiana tradition and rite of passage for more than 100 years. As a uniquely Hoosier form of expression, senior cords are golden corduroy garments worn by college and high school seniors, and adorned with the names, symbols, cartoons, and artwork that is meaningful to them. Previously only a scholastic pastime, senior cords have now been discovered by progressive fashion houses like Bode, and worn by celebrities Harry Styles and Jeff Goldblum, among others. Working with the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, and the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection at Indiana University, this is the only publication solely devoted to this unique form of scholastic expression.
