The Counterpublic graphic identity emerged from a collaborative effort to understand the organization’s dynamic, multifaceted role within the local St. Louis community and beyond. The identity focuses on creating flexible, intuitive systems for use across print, digital, motion, and environmental contexts. Each design element is rooted in ideas of transformation, everyday iconography—such as symbols found in public signage—and, importantly, the city of St. Louis. Primarily typographic in nature, the identity uses the typeface Repo not only to convey information but to orient, signal, and guide public experience. Typographic systems can assert presence, signal belonging, and open new forms of access.
A dot pattern plays a central role in the system, acting as both a foundational grid and a framing device across applications. Inspired by the star-shaped anchor plate grids found on historic red brick buildings throughout St. Louis, it grounds the identity in a local visual language while providing structure and flexibility. Together, these elements create a clear, adaptable system that supports a wide range of voices and programs.
